Inspection of vessels afloat

Inspection of vessels afloat

Underwater inspection of floating vessels carried out by highly qualified divers using cutting edge technology. Maritime vessels are required by law to undergo periodical technical inspections to garantee optimum sailing conditions for the safety of the vessel, the passengers, the crew and the cargo.

These inspections are carried out by vessel classifying societies, internationally approved private entities which guarantees the fulfilment of standards and rules for maritime safety. The Class Societies inspect the vessel regularly and certify that the boat meets the conditions specified on the certificate to the relevant authorities. In this way the vessel can carry out operations complying with all international safety agreements.

In order to inspect the submerged part of the vessel without dry-docking, the IACS developed a procedure called “In-water survey of ships and mobile offshore units”. This is carried out by professional diving companies who are duly certified to carry out the work. Professional divers with CCTV video equipment carry out the inspections while being monitored from the surface confirming to requirements and set procedures of the IACS (International Association of Class Societies).

At present Burriel Navarro SL is certified to carry out this type of inspection by six Class Societies.

Moreover, Burriel Navarro provides different types of underwater inspection, attending to customer requirements, such as:

  • Underwater pre-docking inspections: In this kind of inspection, the shell plating and structural appendages are surveyed, as well as monitoring of existing damages to build a repair proposal before docking.
  • Underwater pre-purchase inspection: Normally carried out with CCTV video equipment and class witnessing, the hull is assessed following class standards and interested parties.
  • Underwater end-guarantee inspections: With either photographs or video, the entire hull is surveyed paying special attention to the coating condition or any other part indicated by client.
  • Underwater inspection of sea growth and anti-fouling condition: Either by pictures or video, the divers carry out an inspection focusing on the sea growth and coating condition, mainly at the vertical sides of the vessel. Both severity and density parameters are assessed allowing the Customer to take further action.
